Project Overview
Client Name: Wilensky Minerals
Industry: Art Gallery / Luxury Collectible Market
Product Range: Brand Experience through Packaging
Problem:
Craft high-end packaging solutions for a NYC mineral gallery that combine luxury appeal with practicality, featuring innovative grayscale design, premium materials, discreet logo visibility, and nested sizing for efficient space use and presentation.
Solution:
For the NYC mineral gallery, our solution centers on designing grayscale packaging that seamlessly integrates luxury aesthetics with practical functionality. Each box size is crafted to fit within the largest box at specified intervals (2x, 4x, 8x), maximizing spatial efficiency and elegance. The lids are specifically engineered to slide underneath the boxes, enabling effortless mineral presentation while ensuring continuous logo visibility, reflecting the gallery's prestigious image and enhancing customer satisfaction.
Role:
I led the entire luxury packaging design project for the NYC mineral gallery, taking on full responsibility from initial consultation to final production. My role encompassed collaborating closely with stakeholders, conceptualizing innovative design solutions, managing material selection and supplier relationships, overseeing prototyping and 3D rendering, facilitating the development of prototypes, negotiating on behalf of the gallery with foreign manufacturers, and overseeing the logistics of mass production. I ensured that every aspect of the packaging design reflected the gallery's brand identity and enhanced the customer experience.

The Challenges
Monochromatic Design Requirement: Designing packaging exclusively in grayscale presents a challenge in maintaining visual interest and luxury appeal while adhering to a limited color palette.
Innovative and Sturdy Design: Creating packaging that is both innovative in functionality and sturdy yet sleek in appearance poses a challenge in balancing these often conflicting design requirements.
Material Selection for Luxury Feel: Selecting materials that convey a sense of luxury and sophistication, while ensuring they meet the structural integrity needed for various box sizes, presents a significant challenge.
Complex Size Hierarchy: Developing a packaging solution with four different sizes where each smaller size fits into the largest box a specific number of times (2x, 4x, 8x) requires a nested design and precision in dimensions.
.
Functional Lid Integration: Integrating lids that can be slid under the boxes for seamless presentation of minerals, while ensuring the logo remains subtly visible in both positions, challenges traditional packaging norms.
Logo Visibility and Adaptability: Ensuring the logo is consistently visible and adapts in size based on the box dimensions (matte black paper with a white logo) requires careful consideration to maintain brand identity and visual hierarchy.
Emotional Appeal and Luxury Representation: Designing packaging that not only represents luxury but also elicits desirable emotions from customers adds a layer of complexity, requiring strategic design elements and materials that resonate with the target audience.

Lessons Learned
Importance of Detailed Client Collaboration:
Putting our client at the forefront of our design and approach proved to be invaluable.
* Sometimes it's the way a question is framed that allows a client to answer as freely as possible
The refinement phase never ends:
Being adaptable in every stage of the design, is what makes for a truly tailored finished product. A design that goes through two refinement phases, only gets to answer 2 series of problems in a design. A design that goes through 10+ allows themselves room to research and develop intricate solutions that can be molded around that insight.
Choosing the right supplier:
The supplier needs to be able to fulfill all of the manufacturing needs and have point of communication that cares about the project, is hardworking, and trustworthy.
Choosing the right company to work with, ultimately made the project possible. Being able to effectively communicate and negotiate where both parties mutually benefited was very important in the success of the final product.
Innovation and Confidence:
Being able to find Inspiration from a variety of sources remains to be one of the most import skills in design.
However in this design, asking the right question led me to the understanding that I may be treading on relatively new ground in this particular market. Understanding what makes a great design and being confident in my knowledge of this hyper-focused niche
